There are a variety of ways to accomplish merging a personalized image into your email design to display per each recipient when they receive the campaign. Outlined below are three possibilities.
How-To
Example #1: Merge a full URL to the hosted image
- Identify a demographic field in your account that is not used. You will use this field to store the data needed for the merge. (I chose Comment2 for my example)
- Create a CSV file that contains not only email address, but also include the full URL path to where the image is hosted.
- Import the CSV into your account to update Contact records.
- Open your email file whether a template or draft campaign and navigate to the drag-and-drop editor.
- Insert a new layout section and assign it as an Image type. Click to select the new section for editing.
- Click the 'Update Image' icon (seen on right under 'Image Details')
- Locate 'Image Location' and replace the entire URL seen with the merge tag. (In my example I used Comment2 field to store the image path, so my merge would look like this %%Comment2_%%)
- Save your file and test it in a campaign. The campaign will need to have a segment assigned that contains recipients that have the data stored for the image path. Otherwise, the image will be broken.
Example #2: Merge only the image name of the hosted image
- Follow steps 1,2,3 & 4 outlined in example 1 to prepare the data needed.
- Insert a new layout section and assign it as an Image type. Click to select the new section for editing.
- Click the 'Update Image' icon (seen on right under 'Image Details')
- Locate 'Image Location' and replace the URL seen with the URL prefix and the merge tag immediately following. (In my example I used Comment2 field to store the image path, below is the visual example)
- Save your file and test it in a campaign. The campaign will need to have a segment assigned that contains recipients that have the data stored for the image path. Otherwise, the image will be broken.
Notes
- Whether or not we include the image suffix (ie the .jpg) depends on whether or not you are including that as part of the image name when uploading the data.
- If we are hosting the images, all images need to be uploaded to the same place either the general media library or all into the same folder in the library to ensure they all have a similar image path.
- Similar to the above steps, you can accomplish the merge using text blocks. Text blocks have an 'Insert Merge Tag' option where you select the field to merge.
Example #3: Utilize dynamic content
You may not have a need to personalize the image per each recipient, rather a group of recipients based on data, like industry, title, or location. In this instance, you do not need to utilize merge tags to accomplish the unique display of an image for the recipient. Instead, use our dynamic content feature!
