Segments and tags are both used in the system to identify a group of contacts as a mailing list.
The difference between these two types of groups is that a tag is a static list of email addresses, typically grouped when a file of email addresses is imported, whereas a segment is a dynamic list that will adjust based on contact data or behavior.
Segments
A segment distinguishes the list of contacts by data or behavior that contacts have in common, like a value for the state they work in or if they opened or did not open an email sent to them.

Tags
You can tag contacts in a variety of ways, however the most common is through the import process.
When you import a list of contacts, you can determine if the group should be kept long term or if it should expire.
- Tag expires=No means that the group will be created and kept long term, or until you would delete it.
-
Tag expires=Yes mean that the group will be created and kept only 30 days after it was used as an audience list for a campaign.
Temporary tags work great for one-time sends. Temporary tags can only be created through the CSV import process.
